As a story in Washingtonpost.com (1/25/05) put it “girls read; boys don’t.” Is there anything a concerned adult can do? Ann Cannon’s experiences as a teacher of children’s literature, a bookseller, a writer, and a mother of five sons have convinced her that the answer is yes. She’ll discuss strategies and specific titles that have been successful with real live boys.

You’re Invited!
Join us for an upbeat librarian's training with Ann Cannon. If you work with boys (and you do) then this is for you! Come away with new knowledge, ideas, and best of all renewed enthusiasm for boys, books, and library life in general. Free.

Monday, September 20, 2010
8:00 – 9:30 a.m.
Whitmore Library Auditorium
2197 Fort Union Boulevard (7000 South)
Salt Lake City, UT 84121-3139
RSVP: Laura Berube

lberube@slcolibrary.org

ULA Annual Conference - May 12 -14, 2010

Don't forget to come to the ULA Annual Conference in St. George. We will probably present the Tween program or another program that was presented at the Cedar City conference.

CSRT/YART Fall Workshop 2009 - CSRT would like to offer a chidlren's/YA workshop day in conjunction with one of the CE Committee's Fall Workshops. If the CE Committee does not have any workshops, CSRT would like to continue to do a late summer/fall workshop in partnership with YART. We will ask for $2500 to cover the cost of a one-day workshop including speaker fee.

ULA Conference 2009 - Theme is "Turn Up the Volume". We'd like to get a really big name speaker, ie. Mo Willems or Jon Scieszka, to speak at the conference and also at a session for the public to attend. ULA President Steve Decker is interested in getting ULA out in the public's attention, so we're hoping they will put money into it. Mo Willems is $3000 plus travel per day (yikes!), but it can't hurt to ask. All ULA members will be able to submit programs for the annual conference starting in August or September. These will come to Round Tables for review. Be thinking of programs, speakers, etc., that you'd like to see at ULA. The conference will be in Salt Lake City on April 22-24 at the Sandy Convention Center. Programs we thought would be good were publishing trends in kid's books, reader's advisory for early readers, and using stats/numbers to achieve advocacy and results.

Communication

CSRT will develop a quarterly newsletter to be emailed to all ULA members. Sections include Programming, Storytime Themes, Book/Media recommendations, News, Continuing Ed Opportunities, Calendars, Member Spotlight, and more. Please let Anna know if you'd like to write an article at azanarini@slco.lib.ut.us.

We will also investigate ListServ options and how much they are. We discussed that if messages come to us we are much more likely to look at them as opposed to visiting a blog or a wiki. However, please keep looking and adding to the CSRT blog at http://www.ula-csrt.blogspot.com/.

We decided that face-to-face meetings are tough because it's hard to find time and gas is so expensive and so will think of other ways to improve communication and sharing for CSRT members including the newsletter and the possible listserv.

CSRT Logo

We looked at some CSRT logo samples created by David Anderson and talked about one we liked with a few changes. We are looking at having block letters that spell CSRT that are colored in with different colors hovering above an open book with rainbow colored pages matching the colored letters. We are looking to brand CSRT to provide consistency in marketing and instant recognition.

Partnership with CLAU instead of Timpanogas

We will ask for money for 2008 to partner with CLAU for a fall author or illustrator visit in September or October.
